Originally released in 2009 as Galaxie Copernicus, the family takes Plantin as its starting point but refuses strict historical reconstruction, instead filtering the wide, sturdy character of the original through contemporary type-drawing sensibilities. Six weights from Book to Heavy each carry matching italics, giving the family a full range for text-setting. The design philosophy, guided in part by early-music performance thinking, treats the past as material rather than blueprint.
Classification
Copernicus is rooted in the Plantin tradition, itself derived from Robert Granjon's 16th-century designs, placing it firmly in the old-style or Garalde category. It is wider and sturdier than most Renaissance revivals, with a deliberately modern interpretation of the source material.
