Aanaar grew from a self-initiated project to support literacy in Sápmi minority languages, addressing specific legibility problems common in children's typefaces. A spur on the top right of the single-storey 'a', a raised joint and slight narrowing all prevent confusion with 'o' and 'g', while a tall x-height and gentle rhythm aid reading flow. The re-released library edition adds two new weights and two-storey alternates via stylistic sets, making the family usable beyond the classroom.
