Funkis
Letters from Sweden · Fredrik Gruber, Göran Söderström · 2016

A display typeface rooted in Sigurd Lewerentz's lettering for the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition, later expanded into a 120-font variable system with three geometric variants.
About
Originally drawn in 2016 for a collaborative art project, the face takes direct inspiration from the lettering Sigurd Lewerentz produced for the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition, which marked the arrival of functionalism in Scandinavia. The Funkis ABC expansion added a full lowercase and introduced three design variants: A with strict circular geometry and closed apertures, B with softer curves and open forms, and C with straight horizontal transitions recalling architectural signage. A variable font release covers all 120 static styles, with axes controlling weight, sharpness, terminal style, dot shape and ink traps.
Classification
A capitals-first display typeface drawn for bold lettering and signage, rooted in functionalist architectural lettering. The ABC variants introduce geometric, humanist and architectural treatments that align closely with the geometric sans tradition.
