Markelius Sans specimen from Letters from Sweden

A grotesque drawn from hand-lettered Helvetica approximations found in the 1960s signage archives of Sven Markelius's Folkets Hus in Stockholm.

About

Digitised directly from original signboards at a landmark Stockholm Functionalist building, each letterform carries the slight irregularity of hand-drawn craft that no purely geometric construction would produce. Four weights with italics span from regular to black, and a variable version is included alongside a unicase stylistic set and four arrow sets aligned to both lowercase and capital heights. Commissioned by Figur for the 2025 reopening of Folkets Hus, the typeface carries a specific institutional and architectural history rather than the neutrality its grotesque lineage might suggest.

Classification

Derived from hand-drawn Helvetica interpretations found in a 1960s Functionalist building, placing it firmly in the grotesque sans-serif tradition with the irregular warmth of vernacular signage lettering.
