Swedish Gothic specimen from Letters from Sweden

A narrow grotesque by Göran Söderström that navigates between Aicher's European rationalism and American Gothic tradition via Stylistic Sets.

About

Designed by Göran Söderström and first used in Malmsten Hellberg's redesign of Tidskriften Arkitektur, Swedish Gothic draws on Otl Aicher's work alongside various European and American grotesque references before settling into its own voice. Narrow letterforms, open apertures and a large x-height make it well-suited to demanding editorial conditions. Stylistic Sets let users shift between the European and American flavours, effectively giving two distinct personalities within a single family.

Classification

A European grotesque sans with narrow letterforms, open apertures and a large x-height, drawing on Otl Aicher's typefaces and American Gothic traditions, toggled via Stylistic Sets.
