LL Atomgrad
Lineto · Stephan Müller, Yevgeniy Anfalov, Luca Pellegrini · 1998

A stencil typeface rooted in four Cyrillic letters photographed on a Chernobyl basement wall, expanded across Latin and Cyrillic by three designers over two decades.
About
Originally released as FF Chernobyl in 1998, Stephan Müller built the Latin alphabet from a minimal Cyrillic sample stencilled on a wall at the Chernobyl power plant, photographed by Igor Kostin in 1991. In 2020, Kyiv-born designer Yevgeniy Anfalov proposed a full Cyrillic counterpart, effectively returning the letters to their source, while redrawing the Latin in the process. Luca Pellegrini completed the project with a formal revision and extended character set, with Viktoriya Grabowska contributing refinements to the Cyrillic.
Classification
A stencil typeface derived from Soviet-era industrial lettering, with forms built around the structural constraints and visual character of hand-cut stencils. Classified as display due to its highly specific, atmospheric origins and visual weight.
