monomonospace grotesquemono
LL Autoscape specimen from Lineto

A monospace grotesque tracing its lineage through bitmap Monaco renderings, now redrawn from scratch by Minjong Kim with a variable weight range and a rounded variant.

About

Originally traced from the 9-point bitmap rendering of Susan Kare's Monaco in 1987 and first brought to print by Cornel Windlin for the 1999 Zurich exhibition Die Schweizer Autobahn, the design has been entirely redrawn by Kim with subtle optical corrections: a faint stroke contrast, squarish dots and improved letterforms that the original mechanical tracing had compromised. A variable weight axis running from Light to Bold, applied independently to both the standard and rounded versions, makes it viable for body text at small sizes as well as display work. The rounded variant retains the same strict monospace skeleton whilst substantially softening the cold mechanical register.

Classification

A strictly monospaced, near-monolinear design tracing its lineage to bitmap renderings of Susan Kare's Monaco; its mechanical construction and equal character widths place it firmly in the monospace grotesque tradition.
