Lineto · Nazareno Crea · 2019

A meticulous digital redrawing of Alexander Phemister's 1858 Old Style Antique No. 7, redrawn by Nazareno Crea from new hot-metal prints of the original matrices.
About
First traced by M/M (Paris) from an old edition of Gulliver's Travels in 2002 and used for their French Vogue redesign in 2003, the typeface was subsequently redrawn from scratch after research into Phemister's original 1858 Miller & Richard design. Crea worked from prints taken off newly moulded hot-metal type, preserving the upright verticals, near-clunky serifs and particular imperfections of the Victorian original while making optical corrections in the transition to pixels. A 2025 overhaul expanded the character set, refined spacing and kerning, and introduced a variable font version.
Classification
Derived from Alexander Phemister's 1858 Old Style Antique No. 7 for Miller & Richard, with the robust upright verticals and near-clunky serifs characteristic of Victorian jobbing types that became the prototype for the Bookman genre.
