LL Grey specimen from Lineto

A French grotesque revival by Aurèle Sack that widens the idiosyncratic proportions of 19th century grotesques into a screen-friendly text face.

About

Originating as Sack's ECAL diploma project in 2004 under the name AS Gold, LL Grey was refined and extended for release by Lineto in 2018. It carries the characteristic rude stroke endings of the French grotesque genre while achieving a contemporary readability suited to on-screen use. The family has since grown to include Greek, Cyrillic and a monospaced variant, with script extensions produced in collaboration with Viktoriya Grabowska and Panos Haratzopoulos.

Classification

Lineto describe it as a sans serif born of a French grotesque, with the stroke endings characteristic of that genre; it draws formal cues from 19th century grotesque proportions, placing it squarely within that subcategory.
