LL Kleisch Display
Lineto · Chiachi Chao · 2024

A Latin serif designed by Chiachi Chao to pair with CJK Ming typefaces, drawing on Baroque and Neoclassical models to align with shared formal features across scripts.
About
Designed from the observation that Latin serif and Ming typefaces converged in stroke models and ductus during their respective periods of rationalisation, Kleisch synthesises features from Van Dijk, Kis and Fleischman to produce a Latin that sits comfortably alongside a wide range of Ming designs. Three static optical families cover text, headline and display sizes, each with five weights and italics, and a fully variable version adds axes for weight and contrast for finer matching to specific CJK contexts. The typeface won a Swiss Design Award in 2023 before its 2024 release.
Classification
Kleisch is grounded in Baroque and Neoclassical Latin serif models, specifically Van Dijk, Kis and Fleischman, giving it the transitional serif character of those historical sources while being purpose-built for pairing with CJK Ming typefaces.
