LL Lutz Headline specimen from Lineto

A caps-only display face drawn from the anonymous letterforms of British vehicle registration plates, named after the Swiss typographer Hans-Rudolf Lutz.

About

Designed by Cornel Windlin and originally released in 1998, the typeface takes its forms directly from the anonymous, still-current lettering of UK car number plates. It exists as capitals only, with no lowercase, and was re-issued by Lineto in 2004 after a light overhaul. The naming honours Hans-Rudolf Lutz, Windlin's teacher at the Schule für Gestaltung Lucerne and a formative figure in Swiss typographic education.

Classification

A caps-only display face modelled on the anonymous letterforms of UK car registration plates, giving it a utilitarian, institutional character distinct from conventional grotesque or geometric traditions.
