A family of caps-only headline typefaces digitised from the official car registration plate lettering of nine European nations, each offered in sharp and rounded cuts.
About
Each national variant captures the letterforms as determined by the stamp tooling used to emboss physical plates, with a sharp cut reflecting the die and a rounded cut reproducing the embossed result. Roots stretch back to Cornel Windlin's 1991 digitisation of British licence plate lettering, with contributions from Stephan Müller covering Belgium, France, Italy and Switzerland (1998–2003) and Lukas Schneider adding Austria, Finland and Luxembourg (2010–12). The German pair, FE Mittelschrift and FE Engschrift, originate from a late-1970s design intended to prevent plate forgery, and were digitised by Müller and Hansjakob Fehr in 1995.
