About

Aldus was designed by Hermann Zapf in 1954 as a leaner, more refined companion to Palatino, intended for book-length text rather than display use. Its more condensed proportions and lighter colour suit smaller sizes and longer texts. Aldus Nova, released in 2005, brought the design up to OpenType standards alongside Palatino Nova.

Classification

Book-weight companion to Palatino — more condensed and lighter in colour. Named after Aldus Manutius though Zapf preferred to call it Palatino Book. Non-kerning roman and italic f to avoid ligature requirements. Aldus Nova released 2005.
