Adrian Frutiger's geometric sans-serif with organic refinements, released by Linotype in 1988 and later bundled by Apple as a system font.

About

Avenir was designed by Adrian Frutiger and released by Linotype in 1988, drawing on the 1920s geometric tradition while correcting the mechanical stiffness of pure geometric typefaces. Frutiger described it as a more organic interpretation and considered it his masterpiece. Avenir Next, developed with Akira Kobayashi, expanded the family to 24 fonts and added condensed widths.

Classification

Geometric sans-serif with organic corrections — optically adjusted letterforms rather than strict geometry. Frutiger called it his masterpiece. Draws from Futura and Erbar but with humanist refinements.
