About
Optima was released by Stempel and Linotype in 1958, inspired by classical Roman stonecutting that Zapf had observed in Florence. Its flared terminals hover between sans-serif and serifed letter, giving it a classical gravity rare in the sans genre. Optima nova (2002) added true italics and seven weights. It appears on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the National September 11 Memorial.

Classified as humanist sans-serif but features subtle stroke modulation at terminals suggesting a glyphic quality — neither fully serif nor fully sans. Inspired by classical Roman capitals and Renaissance tombstones. Proportions based on the Golden Section.
