Trade Gothic was developed by Jackson Burke at Mergenthaler Linotype starting in 1948, growing incrementally rather than as a planned system. Its slightly uneven proportions give it more personality than Helvetica — designers often describe it as airy and characterful. Trade Gothic Next (2009), redesigned by Akira Kobayashi, cleaned up inconsistencies while preserving the original's charm.
Classification
American grotesque based on Akzidenz-Grotesk. More irregular and airy than Helvetica or Univers — designed incrementally rather than as a systematic family. Expanded to 14 style-weight combinations by 1960.
