Univers
Linotype · Adrian Frutiger · 1957
Adrian Frutiger's systematically organised sans-serif family, revolutionary for its comprehensive range of weights and widths at launch.
About
Univers was designed by Adrian Frutiger and released by Deberny & Peignot in 1957, the same year as Helvetica. Unlike its rival, Univers was conceived from the outset as a large, internally consistent system — Frutiger assigned each variant a two-digit number to map weight and width. Linotype reworked the entire family in 1997, expanding it to 63 fonts with a revised numbering scheme.
Classification
Released by Deberny & Peignot in 1957; Linotype later acquired and reworked the family as Linotype Univers (1997) with 63 fonts and a three-digit numbering system. Based on 19th-century grotesque models.
