Atlantic specimen from MCKL

A 42-style display serif family rooted in American Scotch Roman traditions, originally commissioned for the 2019 redesign of The Atlantic magazine.

About

Designed by Jeremy Mickel, Atlantic draws on 19th-century American interpretations of Scotch Romans, referencing specimens such as those from the Boston Type Foundry of 1860. The family spans three widths (XNarrow, Narrow, Condensed), seven weights from XLight to XBlack, and matching italics, totalling 42 styles with variable font counterparts. What began as a single headline commission for The Atlantic grew into a full typographic system through years of editorial deployment and ongoing development at MCKL.

Classification

Atlantic is explicitly described as a display serif family inspired by American interpretations of Scotch Romans, placing it firmly in the display serif category with a Scotch Roman subcategory.
