Trust specimen from MCKL

A 144-style display collection by Jeremy Mickel spanning a continuum from sans to serif, rooted in US coin lettering and 1960s–70s phototype.

About

Designed by Jeremy Mickel and published in 2023, Trust takes its initial spark from the lettering on the bicentennial dollar and the quarter, and draws further on a wide field of pre-digital typefaces including Optima, Friz Quadrata, Kabel and Serif Gothic. The collection is organised into nine subfamilies arranged along axes of contrast and serif presence, each available in eight weights from XLight to XBlack with matching italics, giving 144 styles in total. A unifying sharp diagonal in characters such as A, M, N, V and W runs through every subfamily, traceable directly to the coin source, and a suite of stylistic sets allows further control over voice.

Classification

Trust spans a continuum from sans to serif with variable contrast, drawing on phototype-era references including Optima, Friz Quadrata and Serif Gothic, making it a display system rather than a single category. Its flared strokes and sharp diagonal motifs place it firmly in the display classification.
