A family of six condensed display faces united by spatial constraint rather than formal resemblance, spanning grotesque, slab and hybrid constructions drawn from 19th-century printing traditions.
About
Designed by Frode Helland and released between 2023 and 2025, the family treats limited horizontal space as a generative condition rather than a restriction. Condensed Grotesk reworks the blue-collar worker-printer's staple in three variants with sharp interior corners and open counters; Condensed Antique revives the straight-lined Lettres Egyptiennes Allongées from Laurent et Deberny's ca. 1830–39 specimen; Condensed Alcubierre rotates a compact grotesk construction onto its side for an ultra-extended slab-like form; and Condensed Garland amplifies late 19th-century grotesque hallmarks with diagonally sliced terminals and protruding spurs. The result is an unusually coherent family despite its formal variety.
