Motorik specimen from Monokrom

A neo-grotesque from Monokrom rooted in the systematic principles of Käch and Frutiger, built around shared vertical metrics, regular weight intervals and slanted romans that match their upright set widths exactly.

About

Designed by Frode Helland, Inga Plönnigs and Wei Huang, Motorik draws its logic from the Swiss modernist tradition that produced Univers, prioritising systematic consistency over expressive idiosyncrasy. Small apertures, mirror symmetry and regularised widths give the family a closed, static construction that holds across five weights and matching italics. The foundry frames the project as a revisitation of the mature modernist sans-serif and the cultural moment of its conception and swift ideological collapse.

Classification

Motorik is explicitly positioned as a neo-grotesque, tracing its lineage through Walter Käch and Adrian Frutiger's Univers, characterised by systematic consistency, small apertures, mirror symmetry and regularised widths across all styles.
