A super condensed Devanagari and Latin display typeface designed by Kimya Gandhi, pushed to the limits of compression while remaining legible at headline sizes.
About
Designed by Kimya Gandhi and released in beta from 2020, Lini pairs an extreme condensed form with a large x-height and shortened ascenders and descenders, optimised for stacked headlines and poster work. Its Devanagari conjuncts draw on old manuscript traditions, particularly Jain manuscripts, fitting vertically stacked forms within the kana height rather than descending below the baseline. The family earned a Certificate of Typographic Excellence from the Type Directors Club 65 and currently spans five weights, with a sixth Ultra Black planned.
Classification
Lini is explicitly designed for headlines and large typesetting rather than body text, with extreme compression and large x-height making it unsuitable for small sizes. Its primary purpose is eye-catching display use across Latin and Devanagari scripts.
