displayexperimental layering system
Intersect Typefaces specimen from Muirmcneil

A layered type system from MuirMcNeil that replaces conventional weight with successive linear screen patterns to create the illusion of tonal density within letterforms.

About

Two contour variants, A and B, share 16 screen patterns arranged in four groups of four weights, and are designed to be overlaid in up to 256 combinations. Where standard typefaces offer only a binary contrast of form and counterform, Intersect introduces an intermediate range of apparent tints by mapping contours and screen spacings precisely against one another. Colour, transparency and opacity applied in layout or vector software extend the design possibilities further.

Classification

Intersect is a display-oriented type system built around layered linear screens that simulate tonal density within letterforms, subverting conventional weight relationships through optical illusion rather than stroke variation.
