Le Grand
Newglyph · Ian Party

A sculptural, high-contrast headline serif by Ian Party, conceived as the display companion to his decades-long reimagining of the Romain du Roi.
About
Where its text sibling Romain du Roi is built for rhythm and readability, Le Grand is theatrical by design, with pronounced stroke contrast and distinctive double serifs on lowercase letters such as 'b', 'd', 'h' and 'l'. The family offers 18 styles alongside variable axes for weight, width and contrast, drawing formal inspiration from crescent shapes and the regal finial of the lowercase 'l'. Ian Party's engagement with the Romain du Roi spans his training at ECAL and The Hague through to the SangBleu and SangBleu Empire families, making this release the fullest expression of that research to date.
Classification
Le Grand is a high-contrast display companion to a Romain du Roi interpretation, placing it firmly in the rationalist serif tradition characterised by geometric construction, strong stroke contrast and bracketed serifs with double-serif details on lowercase letters.
