Movement specimen from NM Type

A free variable font by Noel Pretorius and María Ramos, built from the tracked movement paths of South African dancer Andile Vellem at Design Indaba 2019.

About

Commissioned in collaboration with Design Indaba, the typeface translates Rudolf Laban's movement theory into type: direct movement is rendered as bound, straight strokes; indirect movement as flexible, curved shapes. The variable font spans four design extremes — Direct Thin, Direct Black, Indirect Thin and Indirect Black — with continuous variation between them representing changes of movement through time. Available as a free download.

Classification

A display typeface with four design extremes across two axes (weight and directness of stroke), inspired by dance movement theory; the expressive, concept-driven letterforms place it firmly in the display category.
