About
Conceived by Philippe Apeloig during a residency at the Villa Medici in Rome in 1993–94, each letterform is constructed from solid square units with deliberate gaps that read as stencil cutouts, evoking early computer screens at low resolution. Originally made for the Octobre en Normandie Festival of dance and music, the typeface carries that programme's mix of classical rigour and contemporary spirit into its geometric structure. It won a German Design Award and stands as a rare example of a commissioned cultural identity becoming a fully realised retail typeface.
Classification
Built from pixel-like squares with a low-resolution bitmap aesthetic and stencil-like missing parts, placing it firmly in the display category as an experimental, decorative face with no conventional text-use intent.
