Designed by Marc Droz and originating from his studies at the Zurich University of the Arts in 2009, Colroy sits in the Swiss tradition of Clarendon revivals exemplified by Hermann Eidenbenz's 1950s redrawing for the Haas'sche Schriftgiesserei. The family runs across seven weights from Thin to Black, each with a companion italic, alongside Small Caps and a variable font added in the 2022 re-release. Its measured geometricisation keeps it versatile across body text and display settings without losing the rhythmic vividness that makes historical Clarendons readable at smaller sizes.

Colroy is explicitly described as a Clarendon-like slab serif, slightly more geometricised than traditional Clarendons but retaining their characteristic weight contrast and bracketed serifs.
