Knit Grotesk specimen from Nouvelle Noire

A display typeface by Rüdiger Schlömer designed specifically for hand knitting, built on the structural logic of slipstitch knitting patterns.

About

Originating from a low-resolution adaptation of Futura translated into knitting charts, the typeface developed its own typographic vocabulary through the constraints of the craft. Six cuts combine three weights with two background treatments: Dot, which uses a blank background, and Stripe, which applies a horizontal line grid derived from alternating two-tone double rows in slipstitch knitting. The cuts can be layered and combined to produce a wide range of typographic effects rooted in textile logic.

Classification

Knit Grotesk is a display typeface built on a strict horizontal line grid derived from slipstitch knitting patterns, giving it a bitmap-like, craft-oriented character that places it firmly in the display category rather than any conventional text genre.
