Yokai specimen from Off Type

A broad, low-x-height extended grotesque with brutalist and futuristic leanings, built around semi-fixed-width letterforms and mirrored uppercase alternates.

About

Designed by Valerio Monopoli, Yokai is an extended grotesque with a deliberately squat proportion and low x-height that gives it an otherworldly, compressed presence. The family spans seven weights from Extralight to Extrabold, each containing 590 glyphs, and is available as a variable font. OpenType features include mirrored uppercase alternates, discretionary ligatures, ring-shaped dots and old-style figures, lending it flexibility for display and branding work where character is a priority.

Classification

Described explicitly as an extended grotesque by the foundry, with broad, semi-fixed-width letterforms, low x-height and a brutalist character that places it firmly in the grotesque sans-serif tradition.
