League Gothic specimen from Open Foundry

A revival of Morris Fuller Benton's Alternate Gothic No 1 from 1903, redrawn as a free, open-source condensed grotesque for display use.

About

Originally designed by Morris Fuller Benton for American Type Founders in 1903, Alternate Gothic No 1 entered the public domain following ATF's closure in 1993. This revival by Tyler Finck, Caroline Hadilaksono and Micah Rich brings the design into a freely licensed family covering Regular, Condensed, Italic and Condensed Italic cuts. Its extreme vertical compression makes it well suited to headlines, posters and display settings where strong typographic presence is needed in a narrow column.

Classification

A condensed grotesque sans-serif, reviving Morris Fuller Benton's Alternate Gothic No 1 from 1903, characterised by extreme vertical compression and narrow proportions typical of American display grotesques.
