Metodo specimen from Optimo

Davide Tomatis's revival of an early-20th-century European grotesque, with text and Mono cuts that carry distinctly metal-type curves into digital.

About

A grotesque by Italian designer Davide Tomatis, drawn from his master's project at ECAL in 2019. Metodo evolves a lineage of typefaces inspired by Neue Moderne Grotesk, the Wagner & Schmidt design that traveled European foundries as Aurora, Accidenz Grotesk, Cairoli and other names. Tomatis preserves the rounded shapes and tensions of the original metal type while drawing for digital systems. Five weights with italics, plus a Mono variant in matched weights with italics for code and editorial use.

Classification

Optimo describes Metodo as Davide Tomatis's evolution of a German type lineage that traveled European foundries under names including Neue Moderne Grotesk (Wagner & Schmidt), Aurora (Weber), Accidenz Grotesk (Haas) and Cairoli (Nebiolo).
