Algol specimen from OTT Foundry

A modular geometric display typeface by Eliott Grunewald drawing on the phototypesetting-era science fiction aesthetic of the 1970s.

About

Designed in 2023 and mastered by Wei Huang with spacing by Igino Marini, Algol sits in a lineage of geometric, even-stroke display faces from the phototypesetting era including ITC Bauhaus, Pipeline and ITC Ronda. Its simple geometric construction and angular glyphs are well-suited to book covers, poster headlines and editorial contexts that call for a retro-futurist register. The name is a tribute to the science fiction fanzine published by Andrew Ian Silverberg in New York City from 1963.

Classification

A modular, single-weight display sans with even stroke weights and geometric construction, clearly intended for headlines and covers rather than text setting, placing it firmly in the display category with geometric roots.
