James specimen from OTT Foundry

A unicase capitals-only display typeface reviving an alphabet from a 1970 Afro-American music album cover, available in Regular and Stencil versions.

About

Designed by Eliott Grunewald and released in 2022, James reinterprets lettering found on the cover of Dr. Willis James's 'Afro-American Music - A Demonstration Recording'. The design is marked by shifting proportions that alternate between narrow and very wide characters, creating strong rhythmic silhouettes across a block of text. Geometric curves on letters like S, C and O sit alongside distinctive connections in M, N and A, giving the face a convincingly contemporary feel despite its 1970 source material. The Stencil variant explores modular letter-forming in unexpected ways.

Classification

James is a unicase capitals-only display typeface with variable proportions, geometric curves and stencil variant, derived from a 1970 album cover alphabet and not suited to body text use.
