New Burns specimen from OTT Foundry

A low-contrast serif with a generous x-height, designed as a tribute to Aaron Burns and grounded in research into ITC's typographic legacy.

About

Designed by Eliott Grunewald and developed by OTT Foundry, New Burns draws on a research project into the International Typeface Corporation, the New York foundry co-founded by Aaron Burns, Herb Lubalin and Edward Rondthaler in 1970. The typeface takes an organic approach to the serif form, with a wide x-height and restrained stroke contrast that performs best at close tracking and tight leading. Its extended Latin character set supports a broad range of European languages.

Classification

New Burns is described as an organic serif with generous x-height and low contrast, characteristics consistent with a humanist approach to serif design rather than a high-contrast transitional or rational model.
