displaydisplay grotesque
Polka specimen from OTT Foundry

A single-weight display grotesque reviving a 1972 type specimen by Estonian typographer Villu Toots, pushed even bolder than its source material.

About

Designed by Eliott Grunewald, Polka traces its lineage through Villu Toots's 1972 'Kirjakunsti abc' back to Eugene Nerdinger's grotesque, resulting in a high-contrast, round letterform with deliberate irregularities in weight distribution. The x-height is intentionally large and the spacing tight, making compact, bold text blocks the intended use. Available in a single weight as OTF, TTF, WOFF and WOFF2, it covers Latin Extended with support for a wide range of European languages.

Classification

A high-contrast, bold display grotesque with round, bubbly letterforms derived from a 1972 Estonian type specimen; the single heavy weight and decorative character place it firmly in the display category rather than a workhorse grotesque.
