Nikkei specimen from Pangram Pangram Foundry

A four-subfamily sans-serif collection built as a typographic tribute to Japanese immigration to America, drawing on hand-lettered ships' signage, Nikkei community newspapers and Japanese family crests.

About

Designed by Caio Kondo, Francesca Bolognini and Mat Desjardins, the collection comprises four distinct families — Maru, Journal, Line and Pacific — each with 18 styles plus a variable cut and a Crest Set. The subfamilies share a geometric grotesque foundation while each expressing a different formal register, from the rounded warmth of Maru to the structured clarity of Line. Italics and stylistic alternates are included throughout, making it suitable for title compositions with varied rhythmic options.

Classification

The foundry categorises it as Geometric and Grotesk; four sub-families share a sans-serif structure with geometric underpinnings drawn from Japanese-American cultural sources including hand-lettered signage and community newspapers.
