Writer specimen from Pangram Pangram Foundry

A French Renaissance-inspired serif by Fred Wiltshire and Mat Desjardins, offered in three cuts across ten weights with Cyrillic support.

About

Built on the proportions, contrast and diagonal stress of 16th-century French Renaissance type, Writer comes in Display, Text and Italic cuts, each running from Thin to Black. The Text cut is optimised for sizes between 6 and 14pt, the Display cut sharpens and exaggerates the strokes for larger settings, and the Italic is drawn as a lively independent companion rather than a sloped roman. Each style contains 744 glyphs including small caps, discretionary ligatures, tabular figures and alternate Q forms, with Cyrillic following its own tradition rather than mimicking the Latin.

Classification

Writer draws directly from 16th-century French Renaissance type in its proportions, contrast, modulation and stress, placing it firmly in the humanist old-style tradition with distinctly Renaissance characteristics.
