A deliberately contradictory slab serif that pairs soft curves with sharp spiky terminals, closed apertures and triangular serifs to produce an assertive, hedgehog-like headline face.
About
Token sets out to combine opposing impulses: the low contrast and softness of its curves sit against spiky pointed terminals, while stained, closed apertures in the 'a', 'e', 'V', 'W' and 'k' build dense, distinctive word shapes. Two subfamilies divide the family: Token Green carries the upright with its thorny hedgehog alternates, and Token Yellow is the italic, which draws on monospaced typewriter conventions for its wide straight stroke exits and closed serifs rather than following a calligraphic route. The result is a typeface that reads as a functional collision of geometric construction and raw, naive mark-making.
Classification
Described explicitly as a slab serif by the foundry, with geometric origins and sharp, spiky triangular serifs; the closed slab serifs, pointed terminals and mixed contrast place it firmly in the slab category with a highly idiosyncratic character.
