Mars
Production Type · Alaric Garnier · 2016

A vernacular grotesque by Alaric Garnier rooted in American Gothic sign-painting traditions, built across four widths with sharp terminals, bevelled uppercase strokes and flared lowercase endings.
About
Garnier began the project after encountering a metal typeface called Venus at a New Orleans letterpress studio in 2014, and the family grew from a two-width minifamily in 2016 to four widths by 2024. Across Condensed, SemiCondensed, Standard and Extended, the design maintains a large x-height and low stroke contrast, while the uppercases follow a distinct bevelling rule most visible in E, F, G, L, T and Z. The lowercase stroke connections shift character across widths, running ultra-smooth in narrow cuts and angular in wider ones, giving the family genuine optical variety without losing its identity.
Classification
Mars draws directly from American Gothic vernacular sign-painting traditions, sharing the low contrast, large x-height and sharp terminals of that genre. Its multi-width structure and handcrafted elliptical forms place it squarely within the grotesque tradition.
