Manual Grotesk B specimen from Setup Type

A digitisation of Richard Pípal's mid-20th century Slovak signage lettering, preserved and reissued by Ondrej Jób in six weights for display use.

About

Based almost without divergence on Richard Pípal's original model for a manually constructed typeface, this narrow geometric sans-serif was ubiquitous on signage across Slovak municipal buildings, administrative offices and schools during the socialist era. Six styles run from hairline to heavy, all sharing consistent no-contrast strokes and a large x-height suited to display settings. OpenType features include six stylistic sets, small capitals and ordinals, giving the family flexibility beyond its vernacular origins.

Classification

Described explicitly as a geometric sans-serif with no contrast, narrow width and a large x-height, based on a mid-20th century manually constructed letterform model.
