Signal rebuilt Times New Roman from scratch as a natively digital typeface, smoothing out what they describe as 'unlumpy curves' and imposing the organic unity the original Drawing Office process never achieved. The italic sheds its corporate stiffness, the bold weights acquire a hint of 1970s ITC funk, and the X-Light carries a slight Olive Oyl elongation that was left deliberately intact. Seven styles across six weights make it a considered text family for editorial work that wants TNR's cool neutrality without its accumulated baggage.
Classification
A from-scratch reworking of Times New Roman, itself a transitional serif of the Morison/Monotype school. Signal's redraw retains the reticent, upright character of TNR while correcting its structural inconsistencies and adding a full weight range.
