scriptcalligraphic script
Lorber specimen from Signal

A calligraphic script drawn from the 1961 book jacket lettering of overlooked midcentury designer Rosalind Lorber, currently a work in progress.

About

Signal's Lorber takes its forms from hand-lettering Rosalind Lorber produced for a Scribner's Book Club edition of The Forsyte Chronicles, rescued from relative obscurity after the foundry encountered her covers in thrift shops. Lorber worked for Random House, Scribners and other New York publishers through the mid-twentieth century, producing quietly accomplished calligraphic work that has gone largely undocumented. The typeface is currently available as a trial licence on request, with full release pending.

Classification

Based on the hand-lettering of a midcentury calligrapher, the typeface derives from informal cursive book jacket lettering, placing it firmly in the calligraphic script category.
