Mortise specimen from Signal

A six-weight slab serif with monoline strokes, open counters and subtly curved vertical serifs, designed by Seán Mongey and Max Phillips for Signal.

About

Built around a generous x-height, wide proportions and long, slightly curved vertical serifs, Mortise manages to be both practical and characterful across its range. The lighter weights sit neatly on the page while the X-Bold grows exuberantly blocky, giving the family a considerable expressive span. Signal's first collaboration with outside designers, it arrives in twelve styles covering six weights from X-Light to X-Bold, each with a matching italic.

Classification

A slab serif with monoline strokes, generous x-height and long slightly curved vertical serifs, placing it in the upright slab tradition rather than Clarendon or Egyptian sub-styles.
