Store Norske Bygg specimen from Store Norske Skriftkompani

A two-weight monospaced display font drawn from photographs of a 1920s–30s Oslo construction company's hand-painted signage.

About

Arve Båtevik derived Bygg from lettering found in archive photographs of Frimann Bye & Winsvold AS, a mortar and construction materials supplier that operated in Oslo during the interwar period. It began as part of the 'Skrift i Oslo' exhibition, which documented the city's sign painting tradition, and eventually grew into a complete functional alphabet. The result is a fixed-width display face covering Western European, Nordic and basic Latin languages, available in two weights.

Classification

Bygg is a monospaced display typeface derived from hand-painted construction company signage; its fixed-width structure and display origins place it squarely in the display mono subcategory.
