A typeface derived from Norway's 1929 official car number plate alphabet, Vertikal Jernskrift, expanded into a full display family for branding and editorial use.
About
Designed by Arve Båtevik, it grows from the numerals and limited letterforms of Vertikal Jernskrift, the standardised iron-letter alphabet introduced for Norwegian car plates on 17 January 1929. The original design drew on hand-painted road signs of the era, and a bolder, wider variant inspired by the style required on industrial vehicles is also offered. Developed as part of the Skrift i Oslo project to revive Oslo's visual dialect, the typeface now appears in public signage including the Arbeiderpartiet sign at Youngstorget, with extensive Latin and Sami language support and a broad OpenType feature set.
