Acai
The Designers Foundry · Mateusz Machalski · 2017

A geometric display typeface sketched in Rio de Janeiro, drawing from street graffiti and brutalist architecture across six width variants from Ultra Condensed to Ultra Expanded.
About
Designed by Mateusz Machalski with roots in a 2017 visit to Rio de Janeiro, Acai pulls from bold street lettering and the collision of brutalist and colonial architecture. Six width styles run from Ultra Condensed to Ultra Expanded, with a variable font version added in March 2024 alongside additional weights. Two stylistic sets offer alternate single-storey forms for 'a' and 'g', and the family now covers Latin Extended, Cyrillic and Greek.
Classification
A blocky, geometric display typeface inspired by street graffiti and brutalist architecture, with no italic cuts and a strong width-axis variable axis. The design is purely headline-oriented with no text-setting intent.
