Architype Aubette
The Foundry Types · Theo van Doesburg · 1928

A digital revival of Theo van Doesburg's 1928 signage lettering for the Café Aubette in Strasbourg, one of the landmark projects of Dutch De Stijl.
About
Part of The Foundry Types' Architype Konstrukt collection, this face is drawn directly from Van Doesburg's hand-lettered signage for the Café Aubette, a collaborative interior project with Jean and Sophie Arp that stood as a high-water mark of 1920s avant-garde theory. The strictly geometric, rectilinear character set reflects De Stijl's ideological constraints, and as with most typefaces in the Konstrukt series, the character set is limited by the experimental nature of its source material. Available via Monotype's distribution network through Fonts.com, FontShop and MyFonts.
Classification
Based on Theo van Doesburg's 1928 De Stijl signage lettering, the typeface is a geometric, avant-garde display face rooted in constructivist principles with strictly rectilinear forms.
