Architype Van Doesburg specimen from The Foundry Types

A digitisation of Theo Van Doesburg's 1919 geometric alphabet, reconstructed on its original 5x5 grid with the character set kept deliberately limited to honour his single-alphabet theory.

About

Part of The Foundry Types' Architype Konstrukt collection, this typeface recovers Van Doesburg's experimental inter-war lettering, itself a direct expression of De Stijl's commitment to strict rectangularity. The forms are built entirely on a 5x5 grid, and the restricted character set reflects Van Doesburg's original single-alphabet concept rather than any failure of the revival. Historical samples from 1919 and 1920 publications, including 'Klei' magazine and 'La Section d'Or', document the source material.

Classification

Derived from a 1919 geometric alphabet built on a strict 5x5 grid, with forms dictated by De Stijl rectangularity theory. The limited character set and avant-garde origins place it firmly in the display/experimental category.
