Foundry Dat specimen from The Foundry Types

A dot matrix display face built on a 5x9 lozenge grid, designed to layer and tile into continuous patterns and compositional shapes.

About

Constructed on a strict 5x9 grid of oblong lozenge shapes, Foundry Dat carries an integrated background grid that aligns seamlessly when text is set solid, allowing characters to form repeating patterns when stacked or offset. It pairs with the companion family Foundry Dit, which shares the same letterforms but without the background grid, functioning instead as a typewriter-style correspondence face. Four weights run from Light to Bold, with extended dash characters to continue the grid horizontally and vertically.

Classification

Foundry Dat is built on a 5x9 dot matrix grid using oblong lozenge shapes, with an integrated background grid that aligns when set solid. Its primary function is graphic and compositional rather than text-setting, placing it firmly in the display category.
