About
David Quay developed Foundry Fabriek from Foundry Gridnik after being commissioned to create letterforms for steel panels in an Interpolis office interior, working under the guidance of Wim Crouwel. The design resolves the tension between stencil geometry and diagonal strokes by adding a straight on the inside of terminals, giving it a considered finish that lifts it beyond purely mechanical construction. Five weights from Light to Extra Bold make it flexible for architectural signage, environmental graphics and display work where letterforms are cast, cut or embossed at scale.
Classification
A stencil typeface derived from Foundry Gridnik, built on a systematic grid with deliberate stencil breaks and vertical stress. Its industrial fabrication origins and architectural applications place it firmly in the display/stencil category.
